Thorpe theme Park, which used to be called Thorpe Park Resort, is in the village of Thorpe, which is in Surrey, England. It is 20 miles (32 km) southwest of Central London and is between the towns of Chertsey and Staines-upon-Thames. Merlin Entertainments runs it, and it has rides, themed cabins, live shows, and, starting in Spring 2024, Hyperia, the largest and fastest rollercoaster in the UK. In 2019, 1.9 million people went to Thorpe Park, making it the third most popular theme park in the UK, after Alton Towers and Legoland Windsor. But because of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, the park could only be open for 125 days and had limited space, so a huge drop in the number of visitors.
After the Thorpe Park Estate was torn down in the 1930s, the land was turned into a gravel pit. In the early 1970s, part of the gravel pit was flooded to give the park a unique water theme and make room for a fun feature. The Thorpe Park resort was built on that gravel pit in 1979. Part of the pit was flooded, so guests can see Thorpe Park as an island. Since then, it’s grown into one of the biggest theme parks in the UK and one of the ten best in Europe. Tidal Wave is a big water ride, and Ghost Train is a dark ride. Other popular rides are Colossus, Nemesis Inferno, Stealth, Saw – The Ride, The Swarm, The Walking Dead: The Ride, and, starting in Spring 2024, Hyperia.
